This hardly falls under celebrity gossip, especially since no celebrity (even D-Listers) would be caught dead in a Hyundai, but I thought it was pretty interesting.

They are rolling out a new “Assurance Program.”  When you buy a new Hyundai, if you lose your job within one year of buying the car, you can return it.  Yeah, really!  “Customers stricken by misfortune outside of their control, such as becoming disabled or getting laid off” can return the car as long as they have made at least 2 payments on the car.  The return policy covers up to $7,500 in depreciation.  (Is there a model of Hyundai that depreciates $7500 in a year?)

Is your face feeling out of balance?  No, I’m not talking about what happens when your face gets all droopy due to novacaine from the dentist…I’m talking about heavily laden with either positive or negative electrons.  Apparently your skin has both and La Prairie has your answer.  They’ve added pure platinum to a face cream – Cellular Cream Platinum Rare.  Yes, platinum as in what you want your ginormous engagement ring made out of.  Apparently, when your skins electron balance is out of whack…due to stress, pollution (I’m assuming they mean air and not my liver pollution), or sun damage your skin becomes dry and gross.  This stuff is supposed to even it out.  At $1000 for 1.7 ounces it better even out my skin tone and give me the same rosey glow a good night of sex does…and it should come complete with your choice of said stud for the good night of sex.  I’m just saying.

Thank you everyone for sending me the great suggestions for WTF…I’ll be posting them up in the coming weeks. But in honor of Mother’s Day, this Sunday, I have to do this one. My mom is always saving plastic silverware. It doesn’t matter if it was put in the bag of takeout, or if it was the “silverware” that we got at some restaurant. One time when we were on vacation, in Florida, we ate at some famous shrimp place and everything was served on paper plates and with plastic silverware. When we finished, she collected our silverware and was so happy she squealed “oh yay – this is my pattern.” My brother looked like he wanted to crawl under the table and my father just rolled his eyes (in support of our embarrassment) but smiled politely at my mother. I, on the other hand, couldn’t take it. I grabbed the 4 sets of “fine” plasticware out of her hands and broke it in half. I said “Do you really need to carry plastic utensils hundreds of miles back to Ohio? They do make this stuff back there too.”

With that, I give you the “Deluxe Plastic Flatware Set.” I’ve been threatening to buy this for my mom for a couple of years now. It costs $30 for a set of 4 pieces. Not 4 place settings (that would be $120) but a fork, knife, tablespoon, & tea spoon.

Now, for the less expensive version. Well, you’ve actually got a couple of options. The local grocery store sells a 24 pack of plastic utensils – although they consider a place setting to only be 3 pieces (or 8 place settings) for .99. If you really want to bargain hunt, you could stop at Taco Bell and raid their silverware bins by the soda machines. And your table will look tres chic with its blackish/brown utensils. If you’re more of a beigey person, you can hit Wendy’s silverware bins.

And if you think I’m being mean to my mom, she knows how I feel about her plastic utensil obsession and yes, she does read this blog…so you’ll probably be seeing some smartass comment from her. I love you mommy! Happy Mother’s Day!!!!

Since gas is over $4 a gallon, United States retailers are rationing rice, and the government is sending out $600 “economic stimulus checks” I’ve decided to run a new weekly feature called WTF. It will focus on some new/newish product that is being sold for some insanely expensive amount of money. And, as an homage to those “get the look for less” types of services, I’ll also post the less expensive equivalent to the ridiculously priced item featured. I am open to any and all suggestions for candidates, just send me an e-mail if you’ve got one.

Krug recently introduced Clos d’Ambonnay 1995, a single estate Champagne made entirely of Pinot Noir grapes. And it has the distinction of carrying one of the highest-ever price tags for a newly released wine, currently estimated at $3,000 to $3,300 per bottle. There isn’t a definite price yet, because it hasn’t been released.

So that’s the high end swill for pimps like Paris Hilton and Jay-Z. Well, us mere mortals don’t have to suffer with ginger ale, just to look like we’re drinking champagne…although I’ve been known to do that when I’m nursing a monster of a hangover and the thought of putting any more alcohol in my body is enough to make my body convulse into dry heaves. (you can thank me later for that tip). So the alternative bubbly, for the economically challenged, is Veuve Clicquot Brut Yellow Label. The retail on the bottle is under $50 and you can usually find this in clubs and restaurants.
