In the infinite wisdom of corporate America comes the re-hashing of another childhood fad – the pet rock. Back in the 70’s, pet rocks were a huge hit. If you’re too lazy to click on the link, they were a small smooth rocks. That’s it. Owners created their own names and personalities for their pet rocks.
Fast forward 30+ years and now there’s a company bringing back the pet rock. But these rocks are all decorated and have names. They’re going to be available through Toys R Us. The company believes that these things will be so successful, they already have their next release planned for the fall of 2009. That’s pretty funny, considering the first time around the pet rock fad only lasted 6 months.
I think parents will be especially please with the little rock critter named Stoner.
The marketing ploy behind this leaves a lot to be desired too (Natural disaster = profit):
According to veteran toy industry executive
“We believe that natural disasters – earthquakes, tsunamis, volcano eruptions, etc. – created geological changes that disturbed these dormant creatures, forcing them to surface above ground. When our field investigators reported back that the PET ROCKS(R) were real, we decided to re-introduce them to the world again! Since we have greater access to millions more people across the globe through mass communications that didn’t exist in the 1970’s, we predict the PET ROCKS(R) will become an instant fad and a big hit with those active in the collectibles market.”

They look pretty cute… With tastes as picky as kids have today… I seriously doubt these will be able to compete with all the high tech gadgetry out there vying for thier attention.
