You can’t really say that Michael Phelps didn’t get this gig because of “Bong Gate.” I would say it has a lot more to do with the fact that his teeth aren’t exactly the type that the Michigan Dental Association wants to brag about on their posters. So even though Phelps trains in Michigan, they chose native son, and Olympic Gold Medalist, swimmer Peter Vanderkaay. Even though most people have probably never heard of him, at least the Dental Association doesn’t have to worry about the drug issue.

Peter Vanderkaay has chosen to educate children about the importance of good oral health and its relation to overall health. Peter has donated all of his time and receives no compensation from the Michigan Dental Association. Following the assembly at the elementary school, Peter spent nearly two hours visiting all 15 classrooms to talk to the kids. Peter is a great role model and is taking on positive causes in Michigan. Peter Vaanderkay was our first and only pick for this project. He has been a true professional throughout the entire process. Any cause or sponsor would be lucky to have him and would be as thrilled with the results as we’ve been.
